Electroless Nickel (EN)

Custom Nickel FinishingVal-Kro offers a diverse family of electroless nickels. Whatever your application; wear, corrosion resistance, uniformity of a coating or a unique engineering requirement, Val-Kro can develop the correct nickel coating for your products.

All of Val-Kro's electroless nickel products provide a uniform coating.

Val-Nik 60

An electroless nickel with a mid (5-7%) phosphorous alloy that provides a bright coating. This coating provides a hardness of Rc 58-60 as deposited and can be heat treated to Rc 64. Val-Nik 60 is tensile stressed and offers excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance as well as petroleum resistance.

Val-Nik 61

Another option for a mid-phosphorous (3-5%) nickel coating, it deposits at a hardness of Rc 57-60. It is a semi-bright deposit that offers superior wear characteristics and corrosion resistance and can be hardened to Rc 68.

Val-Nik 70

This is a duplex coating of high phosphorous and low phosphorous electroless nickel. Val-Nik 70 provides both barrier protection and wear resistance. This coating should be considered when both corrosion resistance and wear resistance are required.

Val-Nik 100

An electroless nickel with a high (10-11%) phosphorous alloy that provides outstanding corrosion resistance. This coating is compressively stressed with a deposit hardness of Rc 48-52 and can be heat treated to Rc 58. The melting point is 1630 degrees F and it is non-magnetic and ductile.

Val-Nik 106

A electroless nickel with a low (3-5%) phosphorous alloy that provides a uniform coating. This coating is compressively stressed with a deposit hardness of Rc 60-62 and can be heat treated to Rc 64. This coating provides better abrasive wear resistance than other En coatings. Val-Nik 106 is a unique alloy with enhanced adhesion properties and impact strength. This coating also provides excellent petroleum and alkaline resistance.

Val-Nik 121

A "composite" coating of electroless nickel and Teflon® that provides a low coefficient of friction. The Teflon® particles are 0.4 microns in nominal size and are dispersed throughout the coating (15-25% by volume). This composite is hard, uniform, and is functional at temperatures up to 620°0 F. Val-Nik 121 should be considered for applications needing a dry film lubricant or applications that need to be hydrophobic. Val-Nik 121 should also be considered for applications experiencing "stick-slip" problems.

Val-Nik 800

An electroless nickel process that is both lead and cadmium-free. This process has been developed in response to industry initiatives such as the End-of-Life Vehicle Directive (ELV), the European Union's Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), and Waste from Electronic Equipment (WEEE). This bath has a mid-high phosphorous level (6-9%), is compressively stressed, and can be hardened to 800HV or Rc 64.

Val-Kro has both rack and barrel plating capability for electroless nickel applications. We accept and are capable of both small and high volume production needs. We can plate over the following substrates:

  • Carbon Steels
  • Stainless Steels
  • Alloy Steels
  • Tool Steels
  • Copper Alloys
  • Titanium
  • Aluminum
